Are you one of the 12 million people that HMRC are expecting to file their tax return by the 31/01/2024?

Planning ahead is key and we advise clients against delaying the filing of returns until the last minute so that they can relax and enjoy the festive season.

HMRC recorded 22,060 people submitting their tax return for the 2021/2022 period between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day last year. Out of this number, 141 people filed between 11pm and midnight on Christmas Eve – perhaps they were waiting up for a glimpse of Santa?

The peak hour that HMRC noted over the three-day period, was between midday and 1pm on Boxing Day, when 953 returns were filed.  An early Christmas dinner can’t have been on the cards for the 319 individuals who filed their returns at the same time on Christmas Day!

It is worth noting that there are some changes to the staffing of the HMRC helpline until the end of January 2024, so perhaps getting your Self-Assessment return submitted early isn’t a bad idea, however you may want to wait until after the King’s Speech and all the chocolates and mince pies have been consumed!
