by | Jun 5, 2025

STEP Cheshire is delighted to share the details of its next seminar, taking place on Thursday 26th June 2025 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Chester. The event is set to explore the complex and essential role of charities, trusteeship, and legacy giving—a key area for both legal and financial professionals.

With an impressive speaker line-up, this seminar is ideal for private client solicitors, probate practitioners, financial advisers, and charity legacy officers looking to enhance their understanding and collaboration.

Understanding the Role of a Charitable Trustee

The seminar opens with Alison Brennan, Partner at DTM Legal, who will examine the responsibilities and legal obligations of acting as a charitable trustee. Alison will also highlight the risks, governance issues, and practical considerations facing trustees in today’s regulatory environment.

Spotlight on the Institute of Legacy Management

The second part of the event focuses on legacy giving and the role of the ILM (Institute of Legacy Management). A panel of experts in the sector will share insights, including:

  • Stephen Lawson, IDR Law
  • James Stebbings, Head of Legacy Income at Macmillan and Chair of the ILM
  • Fiona Webster, British Heart Foundation
  • James Taylor, Cancer Research UK

Together, they will discuss the ILM’s mission, the importance of legacy income for charities, and how professionals can better navigate the legacy management process.

Interactive Forum: Collaboration in Practice

To close the event, delegates are invited to participate in a live open forum, discussing how probate practitioners and charities can work more effectively together. The aim is to promote collaboration, best practice, and the growth of charitable giving through real-world experiences.

Attendees can submit questions anonymously in advance by emailing chris@crsaccountancy.com when booking.

Client Director Trusts & Estates at bennettbrooks and Chair of STEP Cheshire, Anthony Whittaker said:

“This event highlights the importance of cross-sector collaboration in strengthening charitable legacies. As professionals, we all have a part to play in ensuring that charitable giving is well-managed and understood.
